1970s. It all started like this…
The story of Alba Tramezzini is woven into the personal life of company founder, Antonio Albano, who at just 27, was already a successful salesman. After a forced absence from work, following an accident, the company that employed him decided it no longer required his services and he realised he would have to start again from nothing.
During a business trip to Milan, he discovered vacuum-packed toasted sandwiches and contacted the manufacturer with a view to bringing the products to Apulia. His enthusiasm was immediately disappointed: something in the toasted sandwich packaging did not work and the product was not maintained. After a few months, it was back to the drawing board.
Although the distribution business was not a success, Antonio Albano did not give up. He drew his own brand mark, with an “A” at the centre of a sun, and a seagull. It was the first logo of the “Alba” company and represented a dream that no one could take away from him. It was a dream that involved sacrifice, family, failures and successes. With the creation of the first brand mark, Antonio Albano began making his own products in premises of just 60 square metres.
1980s THE TRAMEZZINO
After a difficult start in production, and after meeting with a businessman from Genoa, who made tramezzini at a local level, he realised that it was necessary to innovate and expand the company. In that period, he moved to larger premises, 230 square metres in size, in Taranto. He had his brand and now, he also had a new product, a good, innovative and quality product: the Tramezzino sandwich, for which he made the majority of the ingredients – from the bread through to the mayonnaise. His was also the first company in Italy to package these products automatically, guaranteeing a product that totally outperformed the competition. The path had finally begun to be a downhill one: the doors to the market were suddenly open wide.
After nearly 9 years, the company moved to Talsano, a small suburb of Taranto, into premises of 400 square metres. It was the early 90s. Production continued to improve and to be extended: rolls, mini pizzas, focaccias and tramezzini, all packaged but with a brief shelf life of around 3 days. Due to this short lifetime, product distribution was still limited to the province of Taranto, although products were sold within important companies and also in military environments.
The abolition of national service was a serious blow to the company, which had become the main supplier to all of the armed forces present in the area. For the first time, Antonio Albano thought about giving up. This is where his oldest son, Mimmo came in. Mimmo was not yet 20, but he had been studying the industry, looking at market specifics, and he understood that it was time to try out something new, conservation “in a modified atmosphere” to make products with a longer shelf life with the possibility to expand into new distribution markets. The company began a conversion process, using cutting-edge technology to allow products to be conserved, even for longer than one month. The brand already had a solid niche opening and was able to win this new wager.
2000s, a national enterprise
The first expansion was completed on the original 400 sq. m premises, leading to the building of a plant nearly 900 sq. m in size. The marketing, production and processing introduced by Mimmo Albano became the driving force that would take the company to national levels.
Youngest son, Claudio joined the company, to take care of the aspects concerning production and innovation.
2007 A new production plant
The company moved to its brand new modern premises in Faggiano, built to the very latest standards. Production was moved to clean rooms, using dynamic structural systems in order to prevent any type of contamination. Production capacity grew to almost 50,000 pieces per shift, with the majority of the processes being fully automated. Ingredients, such as bread, mayonnaise and finished products continued to be made in the new plant
2009 New vending products
This was a busy period. Starting with the hotel, restaurant and cafe trade, a series of important investments allowed the company to extend its ranges and create special formats for specific sectors such as vending. Alba Tramezzini soon became one of the major reference points in the industry. At this time, the company was busy gaining new market shares and took over the whole business network of an historic competitor in Bologna.
2013 – Alba Tramezzini celebrated its 35th anniversary
In November, after some 3 years of research and development, a patented range of products that could be microwaved in just a few seconds was presented in Turin, during an important event. At this time, the company also built its own quality laboratory, which then obtained important international certification from two bodies: the IFS (International Food Standards) and the BRC (British Retail Consortium-Global Standard Foods).
2014 VENDITALIA AWARD
During Venditalia 2014, the most important showcase at world level for the automatic vending trade, the company was presented with the first prize for "Packaging for Vending", with a patented range of microwave Panini.
